My Cardboard Box

A turn of the screw

vise.gifThe United States has decided to designate Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, the country’s 125,000-strong elite military branch, as a “specially designated global terrorist,” according to U.S. officials, a move that allows Washington to target the group’s business operations and finances.

Just some observations:

1. This will strengthen the mullahs at the expense of the IRGC.

2. This will boost the tension between the IRGC and the mullahs.

3. This isn’t going to make Iran’s ‘law-abiding’ international partners happy

4. At home, the diplomats, the Democrats and the left in general are going to be upset because it is indeed another turn on the vise. And it’s a move they (and the UN) had no hand in.

Some conjectures:

1. This might mean a rapprochement between the mullahs and the IRGC, or at the least, an uneasy truce.

2. It will make it harder to trace funding sources for IRGC (and more specifically Al Quds) activities. Likely though, funding will be reduced.

3. It doesn’t put any pressure on the mullahs – yet. More on that later. The desert calls.
