My Cardboard Box

Just a short Intermission…

mccarey_ducksoup_2.jpgApologies for the delay in getting Part 2 done. I am working on it, between the meetings, the phone calls, dumping sand outta my boots…

I would like to respond to one of commenters’ remarks on sanctions.

Sanctions are, in my not-so-humble opinion,  an  official hand-slap; a way to  show, on an international level, that the ‘community’ is not happy with what a nation is doing.

Sanctions have their place. Like pain, they are an indicator that something one is doing is wrong, and that one should stop. However, they are a means, not an end. A tool, not a weapon.

Official sanctions, in the case of Iran, are more a feel-good move for the international community than a corrective device. The Iranian ruling groups are somewhat concerned, about the loss of ‘face’ if nothing else.

But there is blow-back from official sanctions. One will be the opportunity for various nations to increase their influence within Iran and in certain circles. Among these are Russia, China, and to a lesser extent,  ‘problem children’ like Venezuela.

But a more immediate problem will be the opportunity for the Iranian ruling groups to rally support from the populace. When you’re trying to
weaken a foundation, one doesn’t provide jacks.

It doesn’t mean that sanctions should not be used. But they should be the ‘unofficial’ type, a similar and expanded version of what the US Treasury is already doing in denying funding to banks, individuals, and companies involved in Iran’s nuclear program. Extend that quiet pressure to commerce, transportation, and communications

The idea is to put an economic choke-hold on Iran’s ruling classes, while denying them the opportunity to blame ‘sanctions’. Most populations don’t wish to understand the minutae of economics, nor international power-plays. But they do know when the bosses can’t deliver the goods.
