My Cardboard Box

Hob-nobbing with the ‘Little People’

From Opinion Journal:

Yesterday brought an email from David Plouffe, campaign manager for Barack Obama, with an intriguing offer:

Most political fundraisers are hosted by lobbyists and filled with representatives of special interests. But our campaign is different. Our funding comes from a movement of Americans giving whatever they can afford, even $5, and Barack wants to sit down with supporters like you. In the next week, four supporters will be selected for a new kind of fundraising dinner. We’re reserving two of those seats for new donors like you… Our movement is changing the way campaigns are funded. We’re not taking any contributions from Washington lobbyists or political action committees.

Just to make this simple, let’s estimate conservatively that 100,000 individual donors are eligible for the dinner drawing, and that each of them has donated $5. That would mean that Obama has raised $500,000 by dining with four people. And what’s more, Plouffe is describing this $125,000-a-plate dinner as an act of populism! This is further evidence that the problem facing America isn’t special interests. It’s cynicism.

The way I read it, only two of those four seats are for the ‘little people’ who donate at least five bucks. The other two seats, I suspect, are for big-ticket donors. So Mr. Obama will certainly make much more than $125K per plate.

Cynicism, indeed.
